9/13/2004Funk At The Fred: Doomtree, Medida, and The Suicide Kings
Band: The Suicide Kings
Last Friday night was the 11th annual Funk At The Fred. The show was co-sponsored by the Whole Music Club, RadioK, Boynton Health Service, and was held at the Weisman Art Museum. The show was pretty cool. We had about a thousand people come through.
Medida kicked off the evening and I was pretty impressed with them. I talked a bit with Yoni, who remembered the old Whole before the renovation. He talked about going to ska shows and said that the Pacers and the 3rd wave ska scene changed his life.
Next up was Doomtree, who rocked something fierce. The crowd was really intent and focused on the show. Doomtree has been getting a lot of local press and play on RadioK recently. They are playing a big show with D4 and the Swiss Army at First Ave in a few weeks.
The Suicide Kings were hilarious and intense. The three poets yelled and whispered and shouted the contents of their brains. They are all slam poetry champions, and they proved it, raving about everything from depraved roomates to the promotion of unhealthy body image. They turned out to be cool guys, too.
There were also a lot of different tables set up at the show with information about registering to vote, practicing safe drinking habits, and volunteering for RadioK or the Whole Music Club. It seemed like a good time was had by all. Please come back to add your thoughts and memories about this show when our 'Past Shows' message board gets up and underway.
