(2005-02-17) Electrologue vs Spark: Base8, Abinadi Meza, Doug Geers, and Ballet Mechanique [View Show]

I was waiting all year for this evening, where we could join forces with the Spark Festival and show some amazing electronic music.
Base8 started and had an amazing performance. Chris Baker and Anne Resele collaborated on this very complicated piece that included two video projectors, a video camera, and a laptop with fancy software (Cycling '74's Max/MSP I think.) It is pretty difficult to describe, but check out the videos. They set one piece to Satie and the next to Bjork.
Abinadi Meza played a piece from his laptop that was comprised of field recordings. Airplanes, cameras, and birds floated and intermingled through the room.
Alex Lubet, Doug Geers and Ying Zhang collaborated on a long, ambient droning piece. Ying Zhang played some traditional horns and Alex Lubet played the guitar. Those two instruments were fed through Doug Geer's mixer and manipulated (again, with some sort of Cycling '74 software, I believe) before being amplified into the house system. This piece was a slow-builder, but the video snippet gives you an idea of what it sounded like about 2/3 of the way through.
Ballet Mechanique made another appearance after it 2004 Electrologue show. This time, they brought a drummer and a bass player with them. Their set was great sounding, and was also suprisingly accessible. They played with Gene Krupa, dreating a remixed version of one of his drum solos. They also played some original stuff. The gloves trigger events when J bends his fingers. The trumpet also has some sort of mute/microphone that feeds the trumpet signal through a computer and out to the house sound system.
Thanks to everybody that participated and showed up for this show.
