Theme: Making Music

Dessa Darling is truly a Renaissance woman. She’s a spoken word poet, an emcee for local rap family Doomtree, and a Jerome Grant recipient who also moonlights as a technical writer by day. Her solo release “False Hopes”, earned her a spot on the Star Tribune’s “Top Ten Local Releases” in 2005. David Brusie of Rift Magazine aptly described Dessa’s voice as “equal parts Ani Difranco and Mos Def”. If we have one question to ask at Making Music, ours would be “What can’t this woman do, and do exceedingly well?”
This spring, the Whole Music Club presents the fifth season of Making Music, a series that features long-format discussions with talented musicians about their art. Local musician JG Everest (Lateduster, Vicious Vicious) hosts the show, which includes interviews, live demonstrations, videos, exclusive and unreleased tracks, prizes, and Q+A from the audience. These events are free, all-ages, open to the public, and start at 8pm.

So, school is pretty much over and it's like a ghost town around here. What's a person to do? Well, that's what we were asking ourselves, so we dug into the Making Music archives and started pulling out some gems from the past. We just posted a bunch of videos from our Making Music events with Andrew Bird and Dessa from the 06-07 school year. You can see 'em here or here. Enjoy! update: Andrew Broder and POS vids up now, too!

4/27/2007Dessa is amazing. period.

I didn't think it was possible to root more for local rap family Doomtree. Class was in session last night with talented poet Dessa Darling. Not only did she belt out some amazing tunes with support from DJ Paper Tiger and Jessy Greene, but she illustrated wisdom well beyond her years. Her talent was known, but her articulate and unassuming use of multi-syllabic vocab---whoa. Conversation flowed through Dessa's life experiences, digging deep into her past including a valiantly unpopular endorsement of Cher, crushing on Dave Eggers, her writing process, politics, feminism in rap and hip hop, and even how doomtree mc's get and steal dibs on...
